It Takes a Village

2019-04-02 高中国际部 西外小初高双语国际课程部

“Give your time. Listen. Share your story. Heed good advice. Respect. Care. Be kind. Be a trustworthy, socially responsible citizen”—these are the lessons we learn and teach, but “Social Responsibility” is more than an ethical framework, a suggestion that an organization or individual has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large, it is a kindness, sincerity and determination to give your time and care for your community."

We share information on retirement in Western countries and we compare cultures of elder care and social welfare. I am then lead with five students through to a couple’s living-space, a spacious room overlooking a nearby lake, we are shown old photographs and are privileged to be given such an in-depth glimpse into the life and memories of this couple. Everyone is smiling. We take a photo; we share a moment in time. We usually say ‘it takes a village’ when it comes to child-rearing, but the same can be said of appreciating and celebrating older generations, as elderly people need care and comfort to lead a healthy life without worries and anxiety and it is a lack of awareness regarding changing behaviour patterns of elderly people at home that can lead to abuse and neglect, it is therefore important to bridge this gap and be as empathetic as we can when possible because it takes a village.
